WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE LOOK LIKE?

5.40 a.m. My day begins!
6.40 a.m. On the bus to Manhattan
7:45 a.m. At my desk responding to emails and checking my daily calendar
9.00 a.m. Review the day’s schedule with my team
9.45 a.m. Sketch meeting to discuss our current season’s dress options
11.00 a.m. Fittings!
12.00 p.m. Print selection for future seasons
12.45 p.m. Lunch
1.00 p.m. Production meeting
2.00 p.m. Review print artwork and develop new colorways
3.00 p.m. Meet with our fabric development team
4.00 p.m. Review tech packs with our tech team
5.00 p.m. Back at my desk to follow-up on emails and sketch for the following week’s sketch meeting
8.00 p.m. Head home for dinner with my husband and family

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER (SO FAR)?

TELL US ABOUT A TIME YOU OVERCAME A CHALLENGE IN THE WORKPLACE.

The most challenging experience in my career was moving from one division to another — different people, different customers, different culture. It was a difficult move after being in the same place for 14 years. I remember my Dad would always say, "You have to roll with the punches.” An old fashioned term, but good advice that I still live by today. Nothing is ever perfect. You need to duck and weave though life...learn to be flexible in different situations. There will be times you have to run the extra mile to make things work.

ANY FUNNY STORIES OR STUMBLES FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF YOUR CAREER?

A very early stumble in my life became a defining moment for my future career. When I was 10 years old, my Grandmother gifted me a Singer sewing machine and two months of sewing lessons. At the end of the two months, there was a contest to see who could make the best dress. This was the first time I learned about defeat...and I didn't like it! My dress was terrible. In that moment, I looked up at my mother and (sternly) said, "NEXT YEAR I'M GOING TO WIN THIS CONTEST!" My Mom just smiled at me. The following year, I won that contest. I figured out what I had to do to win, and I just did it! I keep that dress in my closet today as a reminder of what is possible.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR A FELLOW CAREER WOMAN WHO MIGHT BE READING THIS?

I believe your career needs to be your passion. Do what you love. Create with joy. Listen to your team’s suggestions — I still learn from them every single day, and I'm not afraid to admit it. Keep yourself inspired, current, and relevant (no matter what your age). You may have setbacks, but stay true to yourself. Listen to your inner compass. Take the path less traveled by, because that can make all the difference. It has for me.
