Meet the Bosses: Introducing Laura

To celebrate Boss’s Day 2018, we decided to introduce you to the bosses we know best. Stay tuned all week as we introduce you to seven (yes, seven) women who run the show right here in our own company — the women behind the clothing you love.

Introducing Laura, London Times President

Introducing the President of London Times, Laura! A Florida native and mother of two boys, Laura loves staying active and spending time outdoors (She has even completed the NYC Marathon!). When she’s not at work, you can find Laura enjoying live music…or a big bowl of wavy potato chips!

Keep scrolling to read a quick Q&A with Laura.

WHAT IS YOUR JOB TITLE?

Division President of London Times.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE LOOK LIKE?

Most days, I wake up early to get in some exercise. It helps focus my mind and give me strength, setting the tone for the day. I am in the office early to get my work done before the days gets too busy. I participate in many design and sales meetings and work with retail buyers in our showroom. There is always a lot going on! I keep a to-do list, but I prefer to remain fluid with my schedule (when possible) so that I am available to resolve issues that pop up during the day.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER (SO FAR)?

My first job merchandising in wholesale was in junior dresses and sportswear. The brand was very successful and growing rapidly. We were constantly challenged to be first with fashion and the workload was enormous. As the end of my first year, our brand was nominated (with four other brands) for California designer of the year. It was an honor and so exciting. BCBG was the winner!

ANY FUNNY STORIES OR STUMBLES FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF YOUR CAREER?

When I was a retail buyer, I was invited by the University of Florida to speak about my career to fashion merchandising students. It was a big deal! I had an early flight and was wearing my best navy suit and favorite pumps, which I owned in many colors. When I arrived on campus, I suddenly realized I was wearing one black shoe and one navy shoe. I was probably the only one who noticed, but in that moment, I wasn’t feeling very fashionable!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR A FELLOW CAREER WOMAN WHO MIGHT BE READING THIS?

I have had many roles in the garment business, from retail buyer to President of a wholesale division. Whether you are in a new job or taking on new responsibilities, there are always challenges — skill set modifications, interactions with new people in a new way, and usually, new systems. My advice is to go with the flow, adapt and be patient while learning what is necessary to contribute successfully. Remember that there is usually pain in the learning curve.
