Q&A
We sat down with Via to talk about what makes her mom so special.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY WITH YOUR MOM?
So tough to choose! Every chance I get to spend time with my mom is my favorite. Some of my favorite simple memories with my mom date back to grade school. When I was younger, I used to love when she would help out with things at school or extracurricular activities. She volunteered at the school library, taught Sunday school, and was even a Girl Scout leader! I always felt really proud when she was there and wanted everyone to know she was my mom. Plus, she always made things fun! She is a very creative and crafty lady. Next to that, a more specific memory would be hand-making pasta together every year for Christmas Eve alongside my Noni (her mother)...a double generation of A+ mothers!
WHAT DO YOU ADMIRE MOST ABOUT YOUR MOM?
I admire simply how good my mom is at being a mother. It’s like she was born to do this. When we are younger, it's hard to see why our moms do the things they do to protect. As I grew older, I really learned how to appreciate that. She was always there, setting a good example for us. She always taught us to do the right thing (and always followed that rule herself). She attended every play, concert, talent show and sports game — as I daydreamed out in the field, playing with my hair — she sat through them all without complaints. I feel really lucky to say I have no memories of my mom not being there. She is an all-around dedicated family member to both my siblings and my dad. She sets a great example of how to be a team player...she always puts others first and is one of the most humble people I know.
TELL US ONE SPECIAL THING NO ONE ELSE KNOWS ABOUT YOUR MOM.
She has such a special connection with children and animals...she is extremely intuitive with both and they always relax around her. They know how good and spiritual she is (Even birds have perched on her shoulder!). I would also like to add that she has great taste in music — 80’s music that is!
WHEN DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL?
Well, all the time of course! She is one of those ladies who is effortlessly beautiful without makeup or glitz and glamour. I have a bunch of memories of my parents getting ready to go to events and dinners as a kid and thinking how my mom MUST be the most beautiful woman in the world. I would watch her do her makeup and give her as many kisses as I could before she left (so I could steal as much lipstick off as possible for my 5-year-old-self). I loved seeing her all fancied up — it made me see how she was truly beautiful in every setting...like a special treat. She is just a beautiful person inside and out.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR MOM ANYTHING RIGHT NOW, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I know I talk your ear off all the time, but probably forget to mention the important stuff like this: First off, I owe you a huge THANK YOU! I hope you know I have always appreciated you and cannot imagine my life without you. Not every child gets this lucky. Since moving to New York I have realized this even more. It is hard to transition, but all of the lessons you have taught me have kept me afloat. It is tough to beat the life you and dad gave us! I hope you know how amazing you are. You deserve a trophy for doing this whole motherhood thing 3 times in a row (plus all of the friends you have treated like family over the years). I will never not need you, and I am so thankful to have the relationship that we do. Thank you for all of the sacrifices you have made for us. I have learned so many silent lessons just by watching you be a great person in every aspect of life. Don’t forget to treat yourself, you deserve it!
